If there's one thing I hate in this world (aside from all the things actually worth despising), it's "perfume-y" fragrance. You know that traditional perfume smell? The really headache-inducing one that always makes you sneeze? Well, I can't stand it. And therefore, one of the defining quests of my life is the search for the perfect botanical fragrance...the one that smells like you've shoved your face in a wildflower patch....or rather, you've been delicately frolicking in a wild flower patch like a proper girl.

These two fragrances come pretty close...

Iris by Santa Maria Novella

I'm rubbish at describing fragrances...so it's best to use the description provided by Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, one of the world's oldest pharmacies, founded in the 13th century by Dominican friars. This fragrance is more overtly floral than the Acqua di Parma, and has the slightest end note of fresh berries.

Acqua di Parma

This is the original colonia from the line, and it's actually designed for men. I'm someone who habitually enjoys saying "f*** you" to gender roles, and I love the fresh, green, botanical fragrance of this eau de cologne. Slightly less floral than Iris, slightly more masculine.

Now I'm off to frolic in some wildflower fields (which are actually a stone's throw from my back door...I love living in the country).

What's your favourite fragrance? Have you tried either of these? Sound off in the comments below.

  1. I wore di Colonia for years. LOVED it. There was a beautiful essay in the NY Times about it decades ago that inspired me to seek it out. I wore it so much, in fact, that I tired of it. Also, I ran out. But I agree, a very special fragrance line. I have never tried the di Parma. I want to! Thanks for bringing it all back. -- Ann E
